PHP stands at fourth place in the February 2007 edition of the TIOBE Programming Community index. Its position has remained the same since last month, while Java continues to hold the top spot.



Java held the top position in February 2007 as well, recording an increase of 18.978%. PHP has climbed the ladder from the fifth position to the fourth position with a rating of 8.847% within a year. C, on the other hand, has maintained the same second position since last year. The last entrant in the list is Transact-SQL with a percentage of 0.543% but it has a tremendous rise in the chart from its thirty-sixth position to twenty. Pascal has dropped from the fifteenth position to the nineteenth position in a year’s time.

In long-term trends, PHP shows a significant jump from October 2001 to February 2002. As the graph on TIOBE’s web site indicates, PHP has been charting an uneven course, facing ups and just as many downs. However, PHP’s position as of Feb 2006 is significantly higher than that of 2005.



The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the worldwide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors.
