Oracle-compatible database company EnterpriseDB has launched EnterpriseDB Postgres, a professional-grade distribution of the open source PostgreSQL database for Linux ideal for enterprises interested in deploying open source PostgreSQL. EnterpriseDB Postgres is an open source, pre-configured, certified binary PostgreSQL distribution that, its makers hope, will simplify enterprise deployment, eliminating the need to source multiple software components on the Web and manually assemble them. EnterpriseDB Postgres includes a one-click installer that delivers the most commonly needed PostgreSQL components and add-ons for major operating systems.

Gartner VP and research director, Mark Driver said, "The availability of a quality, commercial distribution of PostgreSQL will expand its market appeal to a much larger user base. Bundled distributions like EnterpriseDB Postgres can help enterprises simplify and speed deployments."

EnterpriseDB has also launched a Postgres Resource Center, a community-based web site for enterprise application developers and DBAs. TApart from providing free downloads of EnterpriseDB Postgres, the center will host technical information, tools, and other PostgreSQL resources. The site also hosts community-based forums, enabling users to interact with peers and leverage the collective experience of the community.

EnterpriseDB also offers EnterpriseDB Advanced Server, a relational database management system (RDBMS) based on PostgreSQL and includes value-added, enterprise-class capabilities and add-ons, including the ability to run applications written for Oracle unchanged, EnterpriseDB Replication Server, GridSQL for EnterpriseDB Advanced Server, database migration tools, DBA management tools, and a procedural language debugger.
